Discarding of Steel Wire Ropes
Regular inspection of steel wire ropes is essential due to the wear they experience during use.
Daily Visual Inspection
- Observe at least the intended working section of the rope for the day to detect any signs of mechanical damage or deterioration.
- Pay attention to attachment points on the crane, ensure proper spooling, and check for smooth running over sheaves.
- Report any noticeable changes, and expert inspection is necessary for any identified damage.
Periodic Inspection
- Conduct a thorough inspection of steel wire ropes at least every 12 months, or more frequently as required by local legislation, by a competent person.
- Maintain records of these examinations.
- Follow ISO 4309 for winches and cranes, ISO 4344 for elevators, and EN 12927 for cableway installations designed for carrying persons.
Inspection Focus
- Pay special attention to parts of the wire exposed to wear and damage.
- Common visible signs of deterioration include wear, broken wires, distortion, and corrosion.
- Wear is normal, but correct rope construction and lubrication help mitigate it.
- Broken wires towards the end of a rope's life may indicate bending fatigue and wear.
- Distortions are often the result of mechanical damage, impacting wire rope strength.
- Corrosion signals insufficient lubrication, and inner corrosion may occur in inadequate environments.
- Removal of individual broken wires should be done by bending them close to the inside of the strand to reduce the risk of protruding wire ends.

Warning! Do not cut the wire; bend it until it breaks close to the inside of the strand to minimize the risk of protruding wire ends.
Steel Wire Rope Discards
- Discard steel wire ropes following current standards for the equipment or manufacturer's recommendations.
- Determination of disposal should be carried out by a competent person knowledgeable about applicable norms and standards.
Warning! Inadequate inspection or disposal can lead to serious injuries.
